What is Instructional Design?

Instructional design refers to the science of creating effective and engaging learning experiences. It involves creating training documents and other key learning materials to improve comprehension and application of the processes.

The Three Basic Components of Instructional Design

There are three major components of instructional design that beginners in the trade need to understand before they can start creating comprehensive training documents and other materials. These three components make up the Magic Triangle of Learning.

Learning Objectives

Every good piece of learning material needs to have clear-cut goals and objectives. These need to be goals outlined for your “students” or trainees. What is the purpose of these training materials? What should your trainee be able to learn or do at the end of it?

Start every piece of training documentation with set training and learning goals. These goals should describe what the trainee should be able to accomplish at the end of their training. For example, a goal for one of your training sessions might be, “After this course, trainees should be able to conduct their own keyword research.”

Learning Activities

Learning activities refer to the course materials that students and trainees will be running through—the videos, audio lessons, animations, presentations, written content, interactive elements, etc.

This is the most important part of instructional design—the design and development of the actual course materials. And you want them to be more fun and engaging than a boring Word document.

6 Common Instructional Design Models to Use

When developing your training content, you’ll want to follow one of the tried-and-true instructional design models. This will ensure your materials are thorough and can help your audience learn the concepts you’re trying to convey.

1. ADDIE

The ADDIE model is the most widely used instructional design model and is referred to most often in the industry. This is because it covers all of the basic components within its five steps.

It’s also a seamless process to follow when creating your own course materials.

The five steps are:

  • Analysis: The analysis phase is similar to the learning objectives pillar. This is where you’ll pinpoint the goals and objectives for your trainees or students.
  • Design: This phase involves putting together the course strategy and outline, creating the overall design plan for the training materials, designing graphic elements and creating a wireframe before heading to development.
  • Development: The development phase is where your team actually develops the design idea and brings it to life. This could mean implementing the design into documents, presentations, videos, etc., or putting it all together in a learning management system (LMS).
  • Implementation: This phase is where managers and team leaders are trained on how to facilitate the training materials to their existing team as well as when onboarding new team members.
  • Evaluation: The evaluation phase focuses on gathering feedback and assessing results to make sure the training materials are doing their job correctly.

2. Action Mapping

Action mapping is an instructional design model that was developed in 2008 by Cathy Moore. It’s a great model to use when your company is just getting started with learning and development content and needs to map out a lot of training materials at once.

This is because action mapping is all about streamlining the instructional design process to find the best method for creating and delivering learning materials.

The process follows these steps:

  • Identify your business goals. This goes in the middle of your action map.
  • Identify the actions people need to take to meet business goals. Place these actions around your goals on the map.
  • Design your learning activities. There should be one learning activity for each action. Place these activities on the map pointing to the action(s) they help teach.
    Identify the information people need to have to complete the learning activities. Place the information on your map.

This is the perfect strategy for pinpointing the exact information you need to include within your training materials—no more, no less. It’s particularly effective when you need to create a bunch of learning materials at one time.

3. Dick and Carey Model

The Dick and Carey instructional design model is also often referred to as the Systems Approach Model (not to be confused with another SAM-abbreviated model that we’ll talk about later).

This model focuses much more on the actual lesson plan than it does on the delivery of the learning materials. It wants to help L&D teams better pinpoint what to teach rather than how to teach it.

The diagram below showcases the overall model, and while it may look complicated, it’s rather simple. Everything connects to each other with the end goal of finding the perfect course material to help your trainees learn everything they need to learn.

It follows this structure:

  • Identify Instructional Goals: Identify the goals and objectives that your students/trainees will need to know or be able to complete by the end of the training.
  • Conduct Instructional Analysis: What information do your trainees need in order to fully learn the material you’re teaching? You’ll need to provide some of that initial information to help them succeed.
  • Identify Entry Behaviors: Assess the skills your trainees already have out of the skills or information they need to have from your instructional analysis. They might possess basic knowledge of how to do the job due to past experience, but they need to learn your company’s specific processes.
  • Write Performance Objectives: Write out specific goals for each lesson. What should your trainees be able to do once they finish each segment of the training?
  • Develop Criterion-Referenced Tests: Create a test or assessment that you conduct to ensure trainees are properly learning the material.
  • Develop Instructional Strategy: This is where you outline your lesson plan and pinpoint all of the information your trainees need to learn.
  • Develop & Select Instructional Materials: Use a tool like Visme to create all of the instructional materials (presentations, videos, documents, etc.) for your training course.
  • Conduct Evaluations: In the formative evaluation stage, you’ll evaluate how the lessons went and how your trainees did. In the summative evaluation stage, you’ll make necessary adjustments to your training materials to improve success rates.

4. Kemp Design Model

The Kemp design model adopts a circular structure rather than a linear one like we saw in the previous model. This gives the entire process more flexibility, allowing trainers to make changes as they see fit rather than at the end of the training course.

This model’s structure looks something like this:

This circular model means that some of these stages can be worked on simultaneously. This can often make the process much easier and streamlined for teams to complete.

There are nine core elements of the Kemp design model in the center circle that can be completed at any point—but that must be done for this model to work.

These elements include:

  • Pinpoint your overall training goals and objectives.
  • Identify characteristics, skills, and behaviors of your trainees that should be taken into account.
  • Build out course content, outlining specifics on real-life activities and applications that go along with each section.
  • State your instructional objectives and desired outcomes of the training.
  • Make sure the order of your training sessions is logical and makes sense to the trainee.
  • Create an instructional strategy that improves the success rates of your trainees.
  • Determine the best way to deliver the course content with your trainees, whether it’s via an LMS or a packet of documents.
  • Develop a strategy for evaluating both trainee success and how well your training materials set them up for success.
  • Select additional learning resources that can help trainees throughout the lessons.

5. Merrill’s Principles of Instruction (MPI)

Merrill’s Principles of Instruction is a problem-centered instructional design model developed by David Merrill. He was a firm believer that effective training is rooted in problem-solving.

This model follows Merrill’s five main principles of learning:

  • Task-Centered Principle: This principle showcases how effective learning begins with real-world or job-related tasks/problems the trainee can relate to.
  • Activation Principle: This principle is related to the idea that activating existing knowledge helps trainees connect the new information they’re learning to their existing skills.
  • Demonstration Principle: This principle recommends delivering your training materials in a number of different formats to help improve retention.
  • Application Principle: This principle refers to the idea that your trainees should have tasks where they’re required to apply their new knowledge in order to learn by doing.
  • Integration Principle: This principle talks about how the discussion, reflection and presentation of your trainees’ new knowledge improves retention and the ability to integrate it into their day-to-day tasks.

6. SAM (Successive Approximation Model)

The SAM model was presented as an alternative to the popular ADDIE model, especially with regards to e-learning and online training. This model has essentially simplified the five phases of the ADDIE model into three: Preparation, Iterative Design and Iterative Development.

These three phases are:

  • Preparation: In this phase, you’ll gather all the information needed for your training.
  • Iterative Design: Here, you’ll start prototyping your design and training output method.
  • Iterative Development: In this phase, you’ll develop and finalize the actual training.

It’s simple and to the point. However this is a great model when you’re creating just one single training course for new team members and need to get it done quickly.

 

How to Create an Instructional Design Plan

Instructional design makes learning more effective. But the level of impact it has on learners lies in how you plan, execute and monitor the entire process.

An instructional design plan provides a roadmap for creating meaningful learning experiences. Follow the steps below to increase your chances of achieving success every step of the way.

1. Define Objectives

Clearly state the learning objectives. What should learners know or be able to do after completing the training? How will you measure success?

This will help you establish what needs to be achieved and measure success.

2. Analyze Your Target Audience

Identify the target audience for the training program. Who are the people you want to train? What are their roles, responsibilities, and backgrounds?

Understanding the demographics and prior characteristics of your learners will help you tailor the training program to meet their needs and engage them effectively.

3. Conduct a Needs Assessment

Conduct a needs analysis to identify the current knowledge and skills of the learners and the desired state. You can use methods like surveys, interviews, focus groups, and job task analyses. The needs assessment results will help you determine the content and scope of the training program.

4. Select Instructional Design Models

Choose an instructional design model that aligns with your objectives and audience.

6. Select Delivery Methods

After designing your content, choose the most effective delivery methods based on the content and audience.
