We’ve put together an extensive list of social media image sizes to help you create great visual content for the rest of 2020 and beyond. You’ll also find templates in the correct sizes to get you started on the right foot with your visual marketing.

Below is a list of the social channels we’ll cover.

Visual idea: An infographic for each social media platform that includes an example of each template and it’s size, plus extra info like most versatile aspect ratio and mobile considerations.

In the post, when our templates are not in the recommended size, ill put a note in red.

Creating social media images is easy with Visme. We have templates for all the sizes we mention in this guide, you’ll see some examples as you follow along. Before we start, here’s a video with our top tips to create social media graphics.

How to Choose the Right Social Media Image Sizes

Has this happened to you? You create a visual for social media but when it’s shared it doesn’t look the same as how you expected. It can be any of these problems:

  • The content (text, logo, elements) is cut off around the edges
  • The graphic is blurry
  • The image in the graphic is blurry

More often than not, you used the wrong social media image size when designing the graphic. The second possibility is that you used a graphic on a social channel that it wasn’t meant for. One last possibility is that your graphic looks one way on desktop and another on mobile.

Thankfully, the solution is easy.

Using this guide and the Visme social media template library, you’re off to a great start.

  • In the Visme template library click on the social media platform you need to create a graphic for and select the right template and size.
  •  Another option is to create your graphics with a custom size and design from scratch.
  • A third option is to resize a template to match the size you need.

Pro Tips:

1. Never put content too close to the edges of the graphic. Many social media platforms are now showing graphics with rounded edges and your content can be cut off if it’s too close to the edge.

2. Always create your graphic at the highest possible size. We’ll let you know which ones those are.

3. Remember that cover images will be cropped on mobile. It’s recommended to design for mobile, and that way your graphic will work for both.

Universal Social Media Image Sizes for Bulk Creating

Before we dig deeper into each social channel, let’s look at some social media image sizes that work for many platforms at once. While this isn't always a best practice, it can be a great way for small businesses and teams to maximize their social content.

Square Graphics

Squares are the most versatile of all the social media image sizes if you generally post graphics with a link in the description. This image size works great on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram.

  • Min size: 1080 x 1080
  • Max size: 2048 x 2048

Horizontal Graphics

The horizontal rectangle is the second most versatile shape. This shape has two uses:

  • As a direct image, GIF or video
  • As a featured image on your blog post or website page

This image size works great on Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter. This is the size you should be using on your website and blog for the open graph meta tags for Facebook and Twitter Cards.

  • Aspect Ratio 16:9
  • Universal Best Size: 1200 x 675

Facebook Image Sizes

The “new” Facebook was just rolled out and is available for everyone now. Most of the cover image sizes have changed but there’s a way to bypass the constant changes by using one universal aspect ratio and a specific design trick. More on that below.

Facebook Profile Image Size

Profile photos are round on both Facebook Page and personal profiles. Your uploaded photo should be square though.

For optimal results, when using an image of your face, make sure your face is centered in the circle and your head isn’t cut off at the forehead or the chin. If using a logo, use a version that will fit nicely in a circle and won’t be cut off.

The best way to check this is by adding an empty circle to your graphic in the editor. Use the circle shape with a colored border and no fill to double-check your placement. Make sure the circle fits snuggly in the square.

This is the recommended size:

  • 180 x 180

Facebook Cover Image Sizes

There are a number of different Facebook spaces that need cover images. They are:

  • Profiles & Pages – 820 x 312
  • Groups – 1640 x 856
  • Events – 1920 x 1080

For Profiles and Pages, your cover photo should be 820 x 312 pixels, or any larger 16:9 aspect ratio. These cover photos show up on mobile at 640 x 360 pixels, so make sure your most important information is in that center area.

Here are some considerations when designing Facebook cover images.

  • Page covers can be a video instead of an image.
  • The cover image for personal profiles now has the profile photo at the bottom center.
  • There’s a grey gradient along the bottom edge of Profile and Page Cover images
  • Cover Images look wider and taller on desktop than they do on mobile devices.
  • Keep all important content as close to the center as possible, top and bottom are cut off on mobiles and tablets.
  • Groups have a blue band at the bottom of the image.
  • Use PNG if there’s text, graphic elements or logos in your cover image.
  • Always test new graphics before considering them done.

Facebook Post Image Sizes

When you share a post with an image on Facebook, these should typically be horizontal unless you’re creating a carousel post. Posts that share a photo alongside a link preview vary ever so slightly in size, but you can keep the same concept of your image.

These are the recommended sizes:

  • Photos – 1200 x 630
  • Links – 1200 x 628

Facebook Story Image Size

The Facebook Story has a vertical aspect ratio of 9:16.

This is the recommended size:

  • 1080 x 1920

You can create images and graphics in the correct size for Facebook with Visme easily using one of the hundreds of static and animated templates

Facebook Ad Image Sizes

Facebook offers a large selection of ad types. Thankfully, with a couple of sizes you’re covered for most of them. Mainly, there are two types of ads, with a link and without a link. Choose the size according to what type of ad you need

Ads with a link are the most common. These can be horizontal with a 1.91:1 ratio or square at a 1:1 ratio.

The recommended sizes are:

  • 940 x 788
  • 1200 x 628
  • 1200 x 1200

Ads without a link can be either of the two above plus a vertical size in a 4:5 aspect ratio. A story ad is the same size as a regular story with an aspect ratio of 9:16.

Twitter Image Sizes

Twitter has less image sizes to worry about compared to Facebook. Here are the most used and their recommended sizes.

The Twitter profile is round, just like Facebook. Simply upload a square image doing the same testing steps we mentioned above for the Facebook profile image.

This is the recommended size:

  • 400 x 400

Twitter Header Image Size

The Twitter header has the profile image covering the bottom left. Don’t put any important information in that area.

This is the recommended size:

  • 1500 x 500

Twitter Post Image Sizes

When you share a link to Twitter, it will show the image at the universal 1.91:1 aspect ratio. That’s why it’s important to have this image size as your featured image for Twitter Cards.

When you share a graphic straight on Twitter it’ll show in three possible sizes. All must be 1200 px wide. Only GIFs will show up as squares on the feed, static graphics won’t.

The are the recommended sizes:

  • 1200 x 532
  • 1200 x 675
  • 1200 x1200

These sizes also apply for Twitter ads.

Twitter Multi Image Posting Image Sizes

When you share more than one image, their aspect ratio will change as follows.

  • Two images; side by side, both at 7:8.
  • Three images; one on the left at 7:8 two on the stacked on the right at 4:7 each.
  • Four images; all have a 2:1 aspect ratio as a grid.

IGTV is Instagram's relatively new long-form video platform. You can share these right on your Instagram profile as well to increase views, but they're different from Stories as they tend to be pre-recorded and edited videos.

This is the recommended size:

  • 420 x 654

Pinterest Image Sizes

Most of what you share on Pinterest are vertical images. Depending on what it’s purpose is, it’ll have a different aspect ratio or length. Pinterest is our favorite platform to share vertical infographics

This is the recommended size:

  • 165 x 165

Pinterest Profile Cover Image Size

Pinterest has just recently changed the way profiles look. Along with this comes a change in the size of the profile cover. You can add an image, a GIF up to 10MB or a video up to 2GB and 5 minutes.

This is the recommended size at a 16:9 aspect ratio:

  • 1440 x 810

LinkedIn Profile Image Sizes

Your personal LinkedIn profile will have a circular profile photo, but company pages will have a square option. However, both have the same recommended dimensions.

This is the recommended size:

  • 300 x 300

LinkedIn Cover Image Sizes

LinkedIn profile and page covers have a unique shape. They are a lot wider than they are tall. When seen on mobile devices, they become even thinner. We recommend that you include the minimal amount of information possible on your cover image. Your best bet is to use an image or a design.

Visme has millions of photos to choose from in the image library. Choose your favorite and place it in the sized template. Download it and upload to your LinkedIn in no time.

This is the recommended size for a Profile Cover:

  • 1128 x 376

This is the recommended size for a Page Cover:

  • 1128 x 191

YouTube Image Sizes

YouTube also has some image size recommendations. You can create all of these with Visme templates like all the ones above.

YouTube Profile Image Size

YouTube gives you the option to add various borders to your profile photo, but the image size still remains the same.

The recommended size is:

  • 800 x 800

YouTube Channel Art Image Size

Your YouTube banner or channel art is basically the cover photo for your channel.

The recommended size is:

  • 2560 x 1440

It's important to remember, though, that your channel art appears differently depending on the device a viewer is on. Someone on a TV will see a different version of your channel art than someone on their computer as well as someone who is on their mobile device.

So while you need a 2560 x 1440 pixel channel art graphic to appear full-screen on TVs, computers will only see the center 2560 x 423, tablets will only see the center 1855 x 423 and smartphones will only see the center 1546 x 423.

So essentially, you need to have a full-screen graphic, but your most important information – i.e., your channel's name and contact information – needs to be within the center 1546 x 423 pixels.

Video Thumbnail Image Size

The best videos have a branded thumbnail to show it off in the feeds and search results.

The recommended size is:

  • 1280 x 720

Visme offers these image sizes as well as video intros and outros for your YouTube videos.

The Importance of Different Image Sizes For Social Media

Even though we gave you a recommendation up top about how you can use square and horizontal images in specific image sizes, it’s still a good idea to create personalized content for each platform

If you have an ongoing campaign that changes every week like a live show, Twitter chat, or podcast; your best bet is to create one square image and one rectangular image in a 1.91:1 aspect ratio to share with your guests and audience.

When you have a busy marketing strategy with lots of parts, having a strategy for each social media channel can ease up the production of graphics. By using the Visme Brand Kit, you can control the brand style and quality that your team creates right inside Visme.

With the collaboration tools, you can leave comments and recommend edits so that everyone is on the same page even if they are creating images of all sizes for all platforms.
