  • To make a brochure you'll need to define your objective and audience, outline and write your copy, select your visuals and graphics, choose your brochure fold, and then print your brochure.

  • Here's how to create a brochure in Visme: choose a brochure template that meets your needs, customize your brochure, incorporate animations and other interactive elements and then download and share it with your audience.
  • Follow these best practices to make your brochure effective: define your work objectives and audience, keep it on brand, pay attention to design and visuals and measure success.

How to Make a Brochure

Making a brochure doesn’t have to be complicated. We’ve simplified it into five easy steps. Here’s what you can expect.

  • Step 1: Define your Objective and Audience
  • Step 2: Outline & Write Your Brochure Copy
  • Step 3: Plan & Select Your Visuals & Graphics
  • Step 4: Decide on the Brochure Fold
  • Step 5: Print Your Brochure

Step 1: Define your Objective and Audience

Brochure design isn't a one-size-fits-all kind of thing. Yes, you are creating it for marketing purposes, but a lot more has to go into it.

Before you work on your brochure, you need to know what you want to achieve, but mainly who you're designing it for and what resonates with them.

This will determine the brochure's design layout, visuals and information.

Decide on Your Brochure's Audience

There's a common saying, "If you market to everyone, you market to no one." Having a specific audience in mind

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What do you want to achieve with your brochure? Is it to promote a new product, increase brand awareness or drive traffic to your website?
  • Who is my ideal customer or buyer persona?
  • Which type of visual aid or text will pique their interest?
  • What kind of information resonates with them?
  • What type of writing style are they receptive to? Formal, professional, casual, conversational, humorous or serious?
  • What language will properly address their concern?
  • How can I grab their attention most effectively?

When you understand who you're designing for, you can steer your design and content in a direction that's authentic to your audience and increase your chances of success.

Here is a quick tip from Victoria Taylor, Head of Content, to keep in mind while you research how to define your audience:

"Never assume what your audience wants; try to do in-depth research to take out the guesswork and assumptions. Start with reviewing common customer support queries, social media mentions, or highlights from sales calls or interactions."

Step 2: Outline & Write Your Brochure Copy

Next up, you'll need to outline your brochure's copy. The copy is just as important as the design and should always include the following:

  • Headline: This has to be a clear, attention-grabbing headline that speaks directly to the reader's main need or pain point. A rule of thumb is that headlines should be no more than 8-10 words.
  • Sub-headline: This helps to add more context to your headline without making it long, and it should be no more than 10-20 words.
  • Introduction/Opening Statement: This copy is your opening line and sets the stage for introducing your product or service. Treated almost like a mini elevator pitch.
  • Benefits: Showcase 3-5 key benefits that matter the most to your reader. Please don't make it about you or your business; be problem-solution-focused about your customer.
  • Features: List 3-5 features that endorse the benefits you presented previously. They should also skillfully touch on why you're different from other competitors.
  • Call to Action (CTA): Add a CTA that tells the reader exactly what you'd like them to do after reading your brochure. A call to action should only be 3-5 words, short and to the point. Leave the wittiness for the benefits/features. (e.g., "Contact us today," "Visit our website," "Get a free trial").
  • Additional Details: In your outline, plan for images or graphics and any additional copy you might share outside of the essentials. Just be sure they don't overpower the copy.
  • Contact Information: Always add your contact details, not just a CTA. This should include email(s), phone numbers, websites and social media accounts.

Step 3: Plan & Select Your Visuals & Graphics

Whether you're using a template or creating a brochure, your brochure design can make or break it's success.

The visuals you choose dictate how well your content and overall brochure are received; it's based on facts and research. In fact, Outbrain found that content with visuals gets 94% more views, and readers are 80% more likely to read information in the first place if visuals are involved.

When choosing your visuals (photos, videos, or graphics), ask yourself:

  • Does the visual match the overall look and feel of your brand?
  • Does the visual align with the copy's meaning and intention?
  • Is the visual free or royalty-free, or do you need a license?
  • Do you need to hire a professional photographer to take the images?

Once you've selected your visuals, make sure they're high-resolution images (at least 300 dpi), so they look sharp and professional when printed.

When selecting your graphic elements, consider the following:

  • Adding your company logo to help build brand recognition.
  • Deciding between using illustrations, 2D, or 3D graphic elements.
  • Ensuring that the graphic elements add contrast and highlight specific areas of your copy.
  • Choosing visuals that can be viewed in formats like print or devices and screen sizes.
  • Maintaining consistency in the style of graphics throughout the brochure for a cohesive look.

You might want to check out this free design course if you're designing your brochure. It's beginner-friendly and will help you understand the basics with real-life brochure examples.

Step 4: Decide on the Brochure Fold

Brochures come in all shapes and sizes. Depending on your outline, copy, and visuals, the fold you choose will either complement your content or even influence how you structure it.

The fold is based on, well, how it's folded. So when you're picking a fold keep in mind that a:

  • Bi-fold brochure format: This is the simplest fold, and the front and back pages are the two outer panels. It's a single sheet of paper in half, creating two panels.
  • Tri-fold brochure format: This gives you six panels: a front panel, three inside panels, and a back panel. It's a paper folded into three equal sections, with two folds that overlap.
  • Z-fold brochure format: Similar to the tri-fold but with a zigzag fold. The paper is folded into three sections, but each fold goes in opposite directions, forming a "Z" shape. This creates six panels, but the layout is different from the tri-fold.

The fold you decide will also affect the next step, which is printing your brochure.

Step 5: Print Your Brochure

The last step is to print your brochure. Depending on your budget, needs, or preferences, you can print your brochure at home or with a professional printing company.

Regardless of which option you choose, be sure to double-check the following before you send it off to print:

  • Proofread your design or copy before you print 100s, if not thousands, of brochures with a simple mistake. Use tools like Grammarly or Pro Writing Aid to help.
  • Be mindful of how your brochure will be printed and folded when designing so that images or text flow seamlessly across the panels without getting cut off at the fold.
  • If you're printing at home, do a test run to check the color, layout and any text issues before committing to the bulk of it.
  • Set your design files to CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) for accurate color printing, as RGB colors (used for screens) may not match what you see on print.

One last gem of advice from Creative Designer, Daniela Verduga is to only print what you need!

"Avoid overprinting. Order the number of brochures you'll realistically need. Many printing services offer bulk discounts but only print what you can use within a reasonable timeframe to avoid unnecessary costs."

Brochure Best Practices & Mistakes to Avoid

Now we've shown you how to create a brochure plus templates you can use.

But here's what you should keep in mind. Creating a successful brochure isn't just about throwing together some text and images on a page.

Here are certain design principles and practices you should follow to ensure your brochure stands out and achieves its intended purpose.

Keep Your Brochure on Brand

When designing your brochure, keep your brand identity at the forefront. The visual appearance (logo, colors, fonts and images) throughout the document should be consistent with your brand guidelines.

Brand consistency extends beyond the visual elements. Your brand tone and language should align with your brand’s voice, personality and vision.

Haven’t created brand guidelines or designed a style guide for your company? Discover 22 Brand Guidelines Examples & Templates to Inspire You. We’ve also rounded up 10 Style Guide Templates to Make Your Own & Best Practices to Use.

Visme also has an extensive repository of brand guidelines templates you can use to create yours quickly. These guides should outline the dos and don'ts of your brand's visual identity. Make sure to share this document with everyone involved in the brochure design process, including designers, writers and managers.

Prioritize Readability

When designing, it's easy to get carried away with how pretty your design looks, but don't sacrifice readability for aesthetics. Both are important, but if your audience can't read or enjoy reading the copy, then all your work amounts to nothing.

Use legible fonts, pair fonts well and make sure the text is well-spaced. Keep the font size large enough for easy reading, especially for key information, so contact details are accessible.

Measure Success

How will you know if your brochure is successful if you don't track its performance? Without metrics, you won’t know if you should totally overhaul things to reel in more results or stick to the same design.

Set measurable objectives and monitor the response rate, either through online analytics or by collecting feedback from readers.

For example, you can track the number of people who visited your website from the unique URLs in your brochure, redeemed a voucher or coupon, became a customer or made purchases after responding to your brochure.

Brochure FAQs

Brochures are still as effective as they were many years ago. Not convinced? Here’s the complete finding from a Bentley University study

  • 79% of tourists prefer to pick up brochures
  • 85% of people who read brochures discover new businesses
  • 61% of individuals purchase products after viewing them in brochures

Printed brochures are a valuable resource that all businesses should add to their marketing arsenal. You can also use them to boost your online and offline marketing efforts. They are cost-effective and help to show your company’s value proposition to potential customers.

The standard brochure sizes include:

  • Letter size: 8.5″ x 11″
  • DIN A4: 8.3” x 11.7”
  • Memo size: 5.5″ x 8.5″
  • Legal size: 8.5″ x 14″
  • Tabloid size: 11″ x 17″
  • Z-fold: 9” x 12”
  • Custom size: 11″ x 25.5″

Depending on how you want to present your information, you can also choose a tri-fold, bi-fold, gatefold, accordion fold, double gatefold, parallel fold, rollfold, Z-fold, half + tri-fold and half + half fold. We recommend choosing the size and fold that most delivers the best results for your business.

Advantages of Brochures

  • Brochures can be designed in various formats, giving businesses the freedom to choose the layout that suits their needs.
  • Compared to digital advertising, brochures are cost-effective as they can be printed in large quantities and widely distributed.
  • Brochures help build brand identity and reinforce the image of the company.

Disadvantages of Brochures

  • The reach of brochures is limited compared to digital advertising, as they rely on physical distribution channels.
  • Brochures have limited space, restricting the amount of information that can be provided to customers.
  • Brochures may become outdated quickly. You may need frequent updates and reprints to maintain relevance.

  • Brochures are easy to distribute and can reach a large audience.
  • Brochures hold a lot of information and can compactly provide details about your products, services and company.
  • Brochures build trust and credibility by showcasing your company’s objectives, goals and commitment to quality.

When designing your brochure, it is important to have these key elements:

  • High-quality images, compelling copy, clear contact information and a strong call to action.
  • Consistent use of on-brand colors and fonts will help to create a professional and memorable image.
  • Headings, subheadings, bullet points, short paragraphs, white space and graphics to break up lengthy text and enhance readability.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to make a brochure in Word

  • Choose a brochure template that suits your needs.
  • Customize the template by changing the text, images and other elements to match your brand identity.
  • Write engaging and informative text that highlights your products or services.
  • Add relevant images to your brochure to make it more visually appealing.
  • Move text and images around, adjust the margins and experiment with different font sizes and styles.
  • Print your brochure on plain paper or cardstock and fold it according to your preferences.

The downside of using Word is that the design customization options are limited. This can make the brochure’s design less creative. If you need to share your design with a professional for further refinements, Word file formats aren’t suitable for graphic design or professional printing, especially if the brochure requires full-bleed printing or uses specific color palettes.
