20 User Persona Templates to Create Your Own

Jakob Nielsen, co-founder of the Nielsen Norman Group, once said "pay attention to what users do, not what they say."

When creating a user persona, you’ll need much more than hearsay from past users. You’ll need to focus on the what, how, and when just as much as the who to nail down your product designs, marketing goals, and customer journey mapping.

After all, a user persona is a fictional profile that represents a target audience segment based on real user data. It includes demographics, goals, behaviors, and pain points.

So, where do you start?

In this article, we’ll share not only how to create a user persona, real-life examples you can learn from, but share 20 professionally designed user persona templates you can customize to make your own.

Here's a short selection of 8 easy-to-edit user persona templates you can edit, share and download with Visme. View more below:

  • User personas can be goal-oriented, role-based, engagement-focused or fictional, depending on their purpose and the available data.

What Is a User Persona?

So, how do you define a user persona? A user persona is a semi-fictional character representing the profile of your ideal customers. User personas are particularly useful for growing your business or improving customers’ experiences with your product or brand.

Why is this important?

Sinlee Loh, Research Manager at Meta shares that; “As a user researcher, you will often be looked upon to explain why and also how to fix [users’ problems]. The best researchers understand how to make recommendations based on data.”

With a detailed user persona, companies can visualize the needs and motivations of their target user and build relevant connections with them. You can uncover how people search for, engage, buy, and use your products. The more you understand your audience, the easier it is to tailor your products to meet their needs.

What to Include in a User Persona

But what does a user persona typically include? Some user personas might be more detailed than others, depending on your goal, but a general rule of thumb is that a user persona should include:

  • Fictional name: A name that represents the persona (e.g., "Tech-Savvy Tom").
  • User behavior: Insights into how the user behaves, including habits, actions, and decision-making processes.
  • Demographics: Age, gender, education, etc.
  • Gender: The persona’s gender, if relevant to the product or service.
  • Location: Where the persona is located, which can affect usage patterns or needs.
  • Skill or knowledge level: How proficient the user is in the relevant area.
  • Job to be done, needs, or wants: The main tasks or goals the persona aims to achieve.
  • Company details or professional title: The persona’s role, industry, and company context.
  • Main challenges, pain points, or frustrations: The problems the persona faces that your product or service can help solve.

What Is a Good Example of a User Persona?

To help you understand the concept better, here’s a real-life user persona example.

Meet Sarah Bradford, a user persona for Airbnb developed by UX/UI designer Renee Fok as part of her capstone project. Sarah represents young professionals who frequently organize group trips—a key customer segment for Airbnb's platform.

Through Sarah's persona, Renee uncovered a significant business challenge: Airbnb’s platform wasn't supporting group communication effectively.

While the primary booker could message hosts, other guests couldn't, creating friction in the booking experience. Introducing a group chat feature, then, could help improve the app’s user experience and overall customer satisfaction.

A well-researched user persona doesn't just show you who your customers are, it can also reveal opportunities to improve your product and grow your business.

What Are the Four Types of User Personas?

Made with Visme Infographic Maker

When it comes to creating user personas, there's not just one way to do it.

There are four main types of user personas, and each helps you learn something specific about the people who use your products.

  • Goal-oriented personas focus on what users aim to achieve with your product or service. They highlight the user's primary tasks, motivations and objectives.
  • Role-based personas are defined by the user's role within an organization or context, considering the user's workflows, technical expertise and decision-making authority.
  • Engagement personas focus on how users interact with your product, including their emotional drivers, behaviors and usage patterns. They’re commonly used in marketing and UX design to optimize engagement.
  • Fictional personas (or proto-personas) are based on assumptions and early-stage research when detailed data is not yet available. They act as placeholders to guide initial design and marketing efforts until more data can refine them.

Understanding these types helps you create user personas that highlight exactly what you need to know about your customers. This way, you can build a product they'll actually want to use.

How to Create a User Persona

Now, let's talk about how to create a user persona for your business or next project.

As someone with years of design experience, especially in the UX space, I’ve seen how often people underestimate the preparation that goes into building a solid user persona.

And that’s usually where things go wrong. There’s often a major disconnect between who teams think their user is and who that user actually turns out to be.

So, I’ll walk you through the essential steps to creating an effective user persona, not just how to design one, but how to make it something your team can actually rely on.

1. Pick a Behavioral-First Framework

Before you research your user, you first need to define their behavior.

Starting with your persona’s age, gender, and income is the easy part—but that only covers about 20% of the real work. It’s behavior that drives the remaining 80%.

Why? Because demographics tell you who someone is; behavior tells you what they’ll actually do with your product.

Understanding behavior helps you research your user persona more effectively—so you’re working smart, not wasting time or resources. It also ensures you're not working backwards and that your persona supports your overall goals.

Take Spotify, for example. They created six distinct personas based on real user behavior, not age brackets. Each one represented different needs and usage patterns, which then shaped product features.

Here are some behavior-first frameworks you can consider using:

1. Task Completion Patterns

  • Sequential vs. Parallel: Do they complete one task fully before starting another, or juggle multiple workflows?
  • Interruption Tolerance: How do they handle disruptions during critical tasks?
  • Context Switching: How frequently do they move between different tools or environments?

2. Decision-Making Speed

  • Research Depth: Do they need extensive information before deciding, or do they prefer quick decisions?
  • Validation Seeking: Do they rely on peer opinions, expert recommendations, or personal testing?
  • Risk Tolerance: Are they early adopters or do they wait for proven solutions?

3. Skill Application

  • Learning Preference: Do they prefer guided tutorials, documentation, or trial-and-error?
  • Feature Adoption: Do they use basic features efficiently or explore advanced capabilities?
  • Problem-Solving Style: Do they seek help immediately or exhaust self-service options first?

2. Research Your Users

Next, is the lengthiest part of the user persona creation, research.

The foundation of any good persona is solid research. This means combining both hard data and qualitative insights to build a complete picture about your existing users. If your brand is new, conduct marketing research to create an ideal user or customer.

There are a vast number of ways you can do this kind of research. Olha Zaplatynska, Product Marketing Manager at Visme shares her experience on how she gathers user data for personas, strategies and more:

"The tried-and-true strategies for collecting valuable user feedback are through email surveys, user calls, in-app surveys, NPS pop-ups, reaching out to beta users, loyal customers, and running polls on social media and your website. Analyzing support tickets, running user testing interviews, setting up a feature request system, watching user testing videos, and even having face-to-face meetings and chatting with people at events are also super effective methods"

While all these sound great, most people fall into a  common mistake. Thinking research is a one-and-done task.

That might’ve worked for traditional user personas, but it doesn’t cut it today. Especially when launching a new product, website, or campaign, you need to research your persona in phases.

Here’s how to break it down.

Phases of Researching Effective User Personas

Phase Goal Execute This Success Metric
Phase 1: Behavioral Clustering (Week 1) Identify user behavior patterns, not demographics Analytics Deep Dive, Support Ticket Analysis, User Interviews Cluster users into 3-5 distinct behavioral patterns
Phase 2: Behavioral Validation (Week 2) Validate behavioral clusters with real user data Hypothesis Testing, Behavior Mapping, Pain Point Verification If the persona represents 20% of users, it's scoped right
Phase 3: Context Architecture (Week 3) Understand environmental triggers for behaviors Environmental Mapping, Constraint Identification, Trigger Analysis Map the entire user journey with every interaction
Phase 4: Outcome-Driven Profiling (Week 4) Build personas to predict user behavior and guide design Behavioral Narrative, Decision Framework, Success Metrics Predict persona reactions to new features
Phase 5: Activation and Evolution (Ongoing) Integrate personas into decision-making and keep them current Decision Integration, Stakeholder Alignment, Continuous Updates Keep personas updated with new behavioral data quarterly

  • Use icons to represent traits or preferences. Browse our library of free vector icons in several different styles. Use them to replace text headings and visualize sections or key points, such as social media icons, interests, habits, frustrations etc.
  • Add a ‘headshot’ to visualize your user. For the face of your persona, you have several options. Upload a photo or use Visme’s stock photo library to browse millions of options. You can also use our 3D character builder to create an avatar. Animate it for some extra personality!
  • Use data widgets. Want to show skill levels or characteristics visually? Add data widgets like radial charts and progress bars. These help make information quick to grasp and remember.
Pro Tip: Make your user persona interactive! Add links, hover effects, hotspots and even embed videos and animation. This can be useful for creating digital personas that readers can click through and explore to learn more information. User Persona FAQs

The difference between ‘persona’ and ‘user persona’ is simply semantic. A user persona falls under the broader category of persona, just like a buyer persona is also a persona.

A persona is a semi-fictional character that represents a segment of your audience, customer base or potential leads. It serves as a representation of an archetype backed by research and analysis. On the other hand, a user persona specifically represents current or potential users of a given service or product.

There are many best practices for how to create a user persona, but here are four of the most critical for creating successful user personas:

  • Create user personas using research and data
  • Be more specific and go beyond the demographics
  • Work on user personas collaboratively across departments
  • Update user personas regularly

There’s no hard-and-fast rule about how many user personas a company or product needs. But there’s a long-standing consensus that a good number is between 3 and 5.

Yes, UX personas are very much still relevant. They help UX designers create human-centered products and services.
