How to Make an E-Book That Will Grab Your Readers’ Attention

Self-publishing an e-book is a great marketing tactic for your business. No matter what industry you are in, an e-book can give you credibility and expert status. Creating a concise, well-designed and valuable e-book is now easier than ever.

As you know, quality should be paramount in all the content you create, and an e-book is no different. There are some important rules to follow for creating an effective e-book.

In this guide, we will look at how to make an e-book and some quick tips on how to make yours stand out.


Write the Text

An e-book wouldn’t exist without content.

There are two ways to create the content for your e-book. You can either repurpose published articles or essays or write something completely new. Whichever you choose, make sure it resonates with your clients and potential customers. The main idea behind offering an e-book is to give value and solve a problem. The subscribers you gain are also great of course.

Knowing your audience will make the content creation process much easier. Direct the text to your ideal client. Use the language your clients use so they can grasp the information quickly. Be concise, avoid fluff and stay away from too much technical jargon. If you can imagine them nodding their heads as they read, then you are going in the right direction.

When writing an e-book you don't have to use your real name. Writing under a pseudonym has been a common practice among writers for centuries. If you choose, however, publishing a book under your own name can contribute to growing a personal brand.

Do the right amount of research to give your readers the best information possible. Fact check everything and cite sources if necessary.

The title must be attention-grabbing, informative and should encompass the topic completely. Avoid using obscure metaphors or contrived wording. Readers must know what they are getting from your e-book before they download it.


Organize the Content

Before designing the e-book, it’s best to organize your content into sections. A great e-book will have a table of contents with descriptive titles for each section. These should use few words, the right amount for each topic to be clear.

Select parts of the text which can be turned into bullet points or charts. Find informative paragraphs which can be turned into infographic visuals. Take notes on sections which could be well suited to use as captions or quotes. These can break up long blocks of text in a visual way, helping the reader skim the content before reading.

Edit and proofread all your text. Grammar mistakes and typos will make content seem unprofessional even if well written. Use online editors like Grammarly and Hemingway for help.


Use Your Style Guide

If you are creating the e-book for your brand, then you might already have a style guide on hand. You might even have the Visme Brand Kit. These will save you precious time and let you concentrate on making your content great. If you don’t have a style guide or Brand Kit, consider creating one for this and future projects.

If you are creating an e-book for a client, ask them for their style guide. 

If, in any case, there is no style guide available, then you must do the following:

  • Select a color palette.
  • Create a font pairing.
  • Brainstorm a general idea of textures and shapes

Choose Images and Create Visuals

Now that you have the content, an idea of how the sections will be set up and a style guide, it’s time to create the visuals. The most important thing to remember when selecting imagery for an e-book is balance.

Use the Visme editor to generate charts, maps, graphs or diagrams to add visual value to your content. But don’t overdo it--add just the right amount of visual interest to grab the reader’s attention. Each page of the book should have a nice balance of text and visuals. Choose some photos from stock or your own database and have them ready to upload into the Visme library. There are also plenty of free images available inside the editor for easy use.

Design the E-Book

It’s time to put it all together and design your e-book.

In the Visme dashboard, click on the Documents tab and choose the e-book icon. Select a template and enter the editor. If you change your mind later about the template, it’s easy to change. All templates are available on the left-hand panel inside the editor.


Some people like to follow the template as is and insert their content into the allocated sections. Others prefer to use the templates as inspiration and then create from scratch. The Visme editor will let you do it either way. With the help of Suggested Content under the Basics tab, you can customize the template or blank page as you wish.

Start designing page by page, entering the text and visuals until you've customized it completely. Check all the pages for a balance of text and visuals. If you need to create more visuals, you can do so with the content blocks. There are charts, graphs, and icons available in the left-hand panel as well.

Apply color schemes to your entire e-book with one click.

Follow your style guide to choose the fonts and change the colors. To change the colors on all the pages at once, click on Theme Colors in the left-hand panel. The pop up will show you the default color palettes. Use one of these or create a new one. To create a new palette, click on any color in the design. Find the right color in the color box and click “replace all” in the little box below. Use hex numbers if you have them. Change all the colors in the e-book to your color palette and save it for future reference.

  • Use the same font, size and color for all subtitles.
  • Use the same font, size and color for all the text body.
  • Don’t place images behind the main text body. It’s always best to use a white or light background for easy reading.
  • Break up long text with memorable quotes. Either inside the text or as a colored visual.
  • Keep similar styles for all the paragraphs. Justified is usually the preferred style for e-books. Avoid short words like “and” at the end of lines.
  • Leave spaces between text and visuals.
  • Use a similar formatting style for all the visuals. Avoid unnatural drop shadows and excessive borders.
  • Don’t forget the page numbers. Have them in the same position on all pages, except the title page. Use the same font, size and color for all of them.
  • If your e-book is longer than 15 pages, include a table of contents on the page after the title. Make it easy to read by keeping page numbers aligned vertically.
  • Add contact details and an author bio at the end of the e-book. Include a professional photo of yourself or the author.
  • Proofread the entire thing. Even if your initial text was perfect, copying and pasting can lead to mistakes such as missing letters and double words.


Publish and Share

Once your e-book is ready, it’s time to offer it to your audience. Will you be giving it away in exchange for email signups or selling it on your website?

If you are offering your e-book as a free download in exchange for an email, you can add a sign-up form on your website. Set up the form so that when someone signs up, they receive an email with the link and a thank you note.

If you are planning to sell your e-book, then it might be a good idea to convert it into EPUB format. That way your readers can have it in their Kindle. For this, you will need a PDF to EPUB converter. There are plenty available online, but you might have to try a few to see which one does the best job.


Promote Your E-Book

What’s the point of putting all the effort into writing and designing your e-book if you don’t promote it? Apart from the signup or buy now button on your site, don’t forget to do plenty of social media marketing.

Using the same style guide as the e-book, create some social media graphics. Create a book cover design for your e-book and use an online mockup generator for a great looking image. Share them where your readers hang out. Get their attention, show them how your e-book will solve their problem. Send an email to your subscribers with a link to download the e-book. Ask them to share it with interested friends.


Do Facebook live videos and share Instagram stories where you talk about your new e-book. Tell your followers a little about what’s in it, show them the table of contents. Create an animated video for extra attention.

Write an article on your blog about your e-book. Ask some of your readers for testimonials about the book and include them in the article. You can also create a landing page where you show the e-book cover, a little description and a sign-up form. An exit pop-up for your website might also be a good idea.
