Interested in ebook design and want to learn how to create an ebook?
In this step-by-step guide, you’ll learn how to create an ebook that stands out.
Here are the steps we’re covering:
Let’s get into it!
An ebook wouldn’t exist without content.
There are two ways to create the content for your ebook. You can either repurpose published content or write something completely new.
Whichever you choose, make sure it resonates with your clients and potential customers. The main idea behind offering an ebook is to give value and solve a problem. The subscribers you gain are also great of course.
Knowing your audience will also make the content creation process much easier. Direct the text to your ideal client. Use the language your clients use so they can grasp the information quickly.
Be concise, avoid fluff and stay away from too much technical jargon. If you can imagine them nodding their heads as they read, then you are going in the right direction.
Do the right amount of research to give your readers the best information possible. Fact check everything and cite any sources you may have.
The title must be attention-grabbing, informative and should encompass the topic completely. Avoid using obscure metaphors or contrived wording. Readers must know what they are getting from your ebook before they download it.
Before designing your ebook, it’s best to organize your content into sections. A great ebook will have a table of contents with descriptive titles for each section. These should use just a few words, the right amount for each topic to be clear.
Select parts of the text which can be turned into bullet points or charts. Find informative paragraphs which can be turned into infographic visuals.
Take notes on sections which could be well suited to use as captions or quotes. These can break up long blocks of text in a visual way, helping the reader skim the content before reading.
Edit and proofread all your text. Grammar mistakes and typos will make content seem unprofessional even if well written. Use online editors like Grammarly, Hemingway or Prowritingaid for help.
Make sure that you’ve really thought out your page layout before you hop into a designer, especially when considering the mobile devices your ebook will be read on, whether Android or Apple smartphones, ereaders, an iPad or something else.
If you’re creating an ebook for your brand, then you likely already have a style guide on hand. If you’re creating an ebook for a client, ask them for their style guide.
These will save you precious time and let you concentrate on making your content great. You can easily set up your Visme Brand Kit with your specific fonts, colors, templates and logos and use that while you create your ebook design.
If, in any case, there’s no style guide available, or you want to use a different look and feel for your ebook, then you must do the following:
Have all the styling information on hand along with the content. There’s no greater timesaver than good organization, and you don’t have to be a graphic designer to create a stunning, on-brand ebook.
Now that you have the content, an idea of how the sections will be set up and a style guide, it’s time to create the visuals. The most important thing to remember when selecting imagery for an ebook is balance.
Use the Visme editor to generate charts, maps, graphs or diagrams to add visual value to your content. But don’t overdo it – add just the right amount of visual interest to grab the reader’s attention.
Each page of the book should have a nice balance of text and visuals. You can easily upload your own photos into the Visme library to use in your ebook. There are also plenty of free images available inside the editor for easy use.
It’s time to put it all together and design your ebook.
Start by browsing through our ebook template selection below to find something that could work for you.
Create an eye-catching ebook online quickly and easily by getting started with one of Visme’s professionally designed ebook templates. Share content with your audience visually. Find a free ebook template that you can easily customize for your own brand.
Alternatively, you can log into your Visme account, click the Create button in the Visme dashboard, then click on the Documents tab and choose the ebook icon to browse our free ebook templates. Select a template and enter the editor.
If you change your mind later about the template, it’s easy to change. All templates are available on the left-hand panel inside the editor.
Some people like to follow the template as is and insert their content into the allocated sections. Others prefer to use the templates as inspiration and then create from scratch.
The Visme editor will let you do it either way. With the help of pre-designed content blocks under the Basics tab, you can customize the template or blank page as you wish.
Start designing page by page, entering the text and visuals until you've customized it completely. Check all the pages to ensure you have a balance of text and visuals.
If you need to create more visuals, you can do so with the content blocks. There are charts, graphs, icons, illustrations, stock photos and more available in the left-hand panel as well.
Follow your style guide to choose the fonts and change the colors. To change the colors on all the pages at once, click on Theme Colors in the left-hand panel. The pop up will show you the default color palettes. Use one of these or create a new one.
To create a new palette, click on any color in the design. Find the right color in the color box and click “replace all” in the little box below. Use hex numbers if you have them. Change all the colors in the e-book to your color palette and save it for future reference.
Here are some quick tips for achieving balance:
Once your ebook is ready, it’s time to offer it to your audience. Will you be giving it away in exchange for email signups or selling it on your website?
Visme lets you download your ebook in PDF format which can be easily shared online. You can even create interactive ebooks and embed them on a webpage or share an online link hosted by Visme.
If you’re offering your ebook as a free download in exchange for an email, you can add a sign-up form on your website. Set up the form so that when someone signs up, they receive an email with the link and a thank you note.
If you’re planning to sell your ebook, then it might be a good idea to convert it into EPUB format. That way your readers can have it in their Kindle.
For this, you’ll need a PDF to EPUB converter. There are plenty available online, but you might have to try a few to see which one does the best job.
What’s the point of putting all the effort into writing and designing your ebook if you don’t promote it? Apart from the signup or buy now button on your site, don’t forget to do plenty of social media marketing.
Using the same style guide as the ebook, create some social media graphics. Create an ebook cover design for your ebook and use an online mockup generator for a great looking image.
Share them where your readers hang out. Get their attention, show them how your e-book will solve their problem. Send an email to your subscribers with a link to download the e-book. Ask them to share it with interested friends.
Do Facebook Live videos and share Instagram Stories where you talk about your new ebook. Tell your followers a little about what’s in it and show them the table of contents. Create an animated video for extra attention.
Write an article on your blog about your ebook. Promote your ebook on your homepage. Ask some of your readers for testimonials about the book and include them in the article.
You can also create a landing page where you show the ebook cover, a little description and a sign-up form. An exit pop-up for your website might also be a good idea. Read this guide on how to make great exit pop-ups.
Just be sure to keep SEO in mind when optimizing your landing page to ensure that Google properly indexes and ranks your ebook.
Out of all of the steps in this quickstart guide, this is by far the most important. You won’t be able to create and promote your ebook unless you have both quality content and quality design.
