Want to learn how to create an ebook? Or curious about what goes into designing one? You're in the right place.

In this article, I'll show you a step-by-step guide that’ll help you create a professional ebook. I’ve also added expert tips and examples from experienced designers so you can get it right the first time.

If you're short on time, check out this quick video tutorial that walks you through designing an ebook in Visme:

Also, to help get you started on the right foot, I’ve handpicked 8 amazing ebook templates by Visme that you can quickly edit, share and download.

8 Steps to Creating an Ebook

Quick Read

  • Create an ebook by defining its purpose and audience. Choose a relevant topic and outline the structure, including an introduction, chapters, and conclusion. Write in a conversational tone, organize it into sections and use visuals for engagement. Edit for clarity and ensure a clean layout.
  • The best way to create an ebook is by choosing the right ebook software, so choose wisely based on your ebook goals.
  • Design the ebook with tools like Visme, Canva, or Adobe InDesign. Use a professional template, maintain font consistency, and design an eye-catching cover. Convert the file to PDF, EPUB, or MOBI and publish it on platforms like Amazon KDP, Apple Books, or Smashwords.
  • Promote the ebook using a landing page, social media, and email marketing, offer discounts or free chapters to attract readers and gather feedback to improve future editions.
  • You can easily create an ebook with AI using chatGPT and Visme AI.
  • With Visme’s ebook maker, you can create ebooks from start to finish. Access a wide range of beautifully designed ebook templates and intuitive editing features all in one place.

What is an Ebook

An ebook (electronic book) is a digital version of a traditional printed book and is available in formats like PDF, EPUB, or MOBI. It’s usually read on tablets or computers. Ebooks can be used for various purposes, such as lead magnets, training, sales, or across different industries.

Step #1: Write Your Ebook Content

An ebook wouldn’t exist without content.

When it comes to creating content for your ebook, I recommend two approaches: you can either repurpose published content or write something completely new.

Whichever method you decide, I can't stress enough how important it is that it resonates with your clients or potential customers.

Because, after all, the most successful ebooks offer readers value or a solution to their problems. And don't forget about the social media subscribers and followers you gain along the way—they’re a nice plus too.

The biggest pitfall of ebook failures is that they're written for the right people but marketed to the wrong ones. Never assume what your audience wants; always ensure that the topic/content resonates before you start creating your ebook. This saves you time, money and heartache.

Now that we've established that, let me share some tips to help you understand your target audience better and present your information effectively. This will make the ebook creation process much easier.

Here are my top tips for creating your own ebook content:

  • Know your target audience: By having a clear understanding of who your ideal customer persona is, you’ll be able to navigate the reader with the right tone of voice and language they use on a regular basis so they can grasp the information quickly.
  • Be concise and avoid fluff: Try to master the phrase “less is more.” You want to give your readers a good balance of content so they don’t feel under or overwhelmed with unnecessary information. This is essential in learning how to write an ebook that keeps readers engaged and doesn't bog them down with too much info.
  • Conduct thorough research: Be sure to fact-check your information statistics and any dated events to ensure that your book maintains a high level of credibility. I always recommend creating a revised version of your ebook when data or information changes quickly or annually in your industry.
  • Use storytelling to your advantage: When making an ebook, use visual or data storytelling to captivate your audience and keep them engaged with your content. This is especially powerful for academic topics, where storytelling can transform dry information into compelling content.
  • Create an attention-grabbing title: Your title is one of the first things people view, so try to give your ebook an informative and eye-catching title. Avoid using obscure metaphors or contrived wording. Readers must know what they can get from your ebook before they read, purchase or download it.

If you're finding it challenging to write content from scratch, I suggest using Visme's AI text generator to create terrific first drafts. It's also super useful for proofreading, shortening, expanding or adjusting the tone of your text.

Want to learn more about writing techniques? Check out this comprehensive guide to writing an ebook. It includes an easy, step-by-step guide to help anyone write an engaging ebook.

Step #2: Organize Your Content

Before designing your ebook, I recommend organizing your content into sections.

A great ebook example will have a table of contents with descriptive titles for each section for an easy-to-follow ebook layout. These should use just a few words—the right amount for each topic to be clear.

Select parts of the text which can be turned into bullet points or charts. Find informative paragraphs that can be turned into infographic visuals.

Take notes on sections that could be well suited to use as captions or quotes. These can break up long blocks of text in a visual way, helping the reader skim the content before reading.

Edit and proofread all your texts. Grammar mistakes and typos will make content seem unprofessional even if well written. Use online editors like Grammarly, Hemingway or ProWritingAid for help.

One crucial tip before we move on: Make sure you've thoroughly planned your page layout before jumping into a designer, especially when considering the mobile devices your ebook will be read on, whether Android or Apple smartphones, e-readers, an iPad or something else.

Step #3: Use a Style Guide

Whether you're creating an ebook for yourself or a client, I highly recommend having a style guide or brand kit on hand as you start developing your design ideas.

A style guide will help you settle on a specific design, style or color palette that should be applied throughout your entire ebook. Trust me, you need this consistency to avoid your ebook looking incoherent and unprofessional.

Short on time? No worries! A brand kit is your next best bet. I recommend trying Visme's AI-powered Brand Kit to create one for you instantly.

Here's what makes it great: Visme’s Brand Kit automatically adds your branding elements to your editor dashboard, giving you quick access as you design your ebook or future projects.

And even better, it suggests ebook templates for you that match your branding. This means you can avoid creating from scratch or spending hours searching for the right one. Save time and maintain brand integrity in one go—love it!

Prefer to create your own style guide? I've got you covered. Check out this style guide article, equipped with best practices and templates. It'll show you how to:

Before you move on to the next step, here’s a pro tip that’s guaranteed to save your hours. Keep all your styling information and content organized and ready to go. Good organization is your best friend here. And remember, you don't have to be a graphic designer to create a stunning, on-brand ebook.

Step #4: Choose Images and Create Visuals

The visuals you select for your ebook are just as important as their content. Not only do they make your content more visually appealing but memorable as well.

Here's an interesting fact: around 65% of the population are visual learners and remember 65% of what they see compared to audio or text.

A screenshot of a nutritional ebook template in Visme's design editor.
Customize this ebook template and make it your own!Edit and Download

Of course, when we talk about choosing images and creating visuals, the first thing we need to focus on is the cover of your ebook.

I came across a fascinating insight from Paper Raven Books Publishing: studies have shown that up to 80% of people are initially drawn to a book because of its cover, and up to 60% will decide to buy it (even after reading the back cover) based on the cover’s visual design alone.

So yes, people really do judge a book by its cover, whether you like it or not. But that also means there’s a lot of pressure on you to get it right.

How do you know if you’re choosing the best possible image for your cover?

Don’t worry—you’ve got options!

First, you can check out Visme’s image library. It offers a wide collection of royalty-free images and videos you can use for your cover or throughout your ebook.

Second, if you're not too excited about searching for the perfect image, I'd recommend trying Visme’s AI Image Generator instead. The tool can help you create exactly what you want rather than settling for something that's just okay.

Simply describe the image you have in mind, and choose your image styles—photos, paintings, pencil drawings, 3D graphics, and more—and watch as the algorithm produces your idea with multiple options. You can even bring fictional characters to life or showcase the best examples of what your ebook has to offer.

Now, for the visuals inside your ebook, I want you to consider these key questions:

  • What sections of your ebook would benefit the most from visuals?
  • What type of visuals would help to fully illustrate your points, strategy or data?
  • How many images should you include?

Let’s say that your ebook is about how companies generate sales, and you have a chapter on the sales of top companies over a ten-year time span. To help the reader visualize this information, I'd recommend adding a line chart similar to the template below to demonstrate various company sales projections over the years.

10 Years Sales Overview Line Graph
Customize this template and make it your own! Edit and Download

As you go deeper into the context, you can add images or photos that demonstrate the elements or events that had an impact on each company based on the data you're sharing.

Another thing that I really like about Visme is how convenient it is to upload your own images. This comes in handy especially when you want to use the images/visuals you gathered during your research.

Got some low-quality visuals? No problem! You can fix them up with Visme's AI edit tools. With a few clicks, you can unblur and upscale images, erase and replace objects and remove unwanted backgrounds.

When it comes to adding charts, graphs, or even maps, Visme has thousands of data visualization widgets and tools to help bring your data to life. It also lets you import data directly from Google Sheets so you're always working with the most up-to-date data.

One final piece of advice before you move to the next step: Don’t overdo it with the visuals—try to find the right balance to grab and keep your reader’s attention.

Step #5: Design Your Ebook

Now it’s time to put it all together and create something amazing. Let me show you how to go about it.

First Up: Templates

I’ve put together a short selection of ebook templates you can use to create your own ebook. Each one is professionally designed by an expert designer, so all you need to do is customize them to your liking or brand.

Ebook Templates

Create an eye-catching ebook online quickly and easily by getting started with one of Visme’s professionally designed ebook templates. Share content with your audience visually. Find a free ebook template that you can easily customize for your own brand.

Create your ebook View more templates

Alternatively, if you want more ebook design examples and templates to browse you can view our ebook template library. You’ll find tons of ebook design ideas to spark your creative juices.

And here's something really cool: If you’re short on time or facing a deadline, I highly recommend trying Visme’s AI eBook Generator for a completely unique design. Just enter your prompt and watch the AI work its magic.

To get started, log into your Visme account, click the “Create New” button in your Visme dashboard, then click on the option “Projects” → “Documents” and choose the ebook icon to browse dozens of free ebook templates. Select one and jump right into the editor.

A screenshot of the available ebook templates in Visme's design dashboard.

Changed your mind about the template? No worries! All templates are easily accessible on the left-hand panel inside the editor.

Here’s something interesting I’ve noticed: Some people like to follow the template as is and insert their content into the allocated sections. Others prefer to use the templates as inspiration and then create from scratch.

The good news, however, is that the Visme editor supports both approaches. With the pre-designed content blocks under the “Basics” tab, you can customize everything exactly how you want.

Start designing page by page, entering the text and visuals until you've customized it completely. Just make sure to check all the pages to ensure you have a balance of text and visuals.

Need more visual elements? You'll find charts, graphs, icons, illustrations, stock photos and more in the left-hand panel as well.

A GIF screengrab showcasing how each page in your ebook can have the color scheme changed with a click.

Now, let me walk you through the customization process.

Follow your style guide to choose fonts and colors. Here's a time-saving trick I love: To change colors on all pages at once, click on “Theme Colors” in the left-hand panel. The pop-up will show you the default color palettes. Use one of these or create a new one.

Creating your own palette is super simple too. Click any color in the design, find the perfect shade in the color box and click “replace all” in the box below. Have hex numbers handy? You can use those too. Change all the colors in the ebook to your color palette and save it for future reference.

After years of creating ebooks, here are my top tips to help you achieve the perfect balance:

An infographic showcasing your ebook design checklist.
  • Use the same font, size and color for all subtitles and text bodies.
  • Keep your text readable—I always avoid placing images behind the main text and stick to white or light backgrounds.
  • Break up long text with memorable quotes, either within the text or as a colored visual.
  • Maintain consistent paragraph styles—from my experience, justified text usually works best for ebooks.
  • Leave spaces between text and visuals.
  • Use a similar formatting style for all the visuals. Avoid unnatural drop shadows and excessive borders.
  • Don’t forget the page numbers. Have them in the same position on all pages except the title page. Use the same font, size and color for all of them.
  • Working on a longer ebook (more than 15 pages)? I strongly recommend adding a table of contents right after the title page. Make it easy to read by keeping page numbers aligned vertically.
  • Add contact details and an author bio at the end of the e-book. Include a professional photo of yourself or the author.
  • Proofread the entire thing. Even if your initial text was perfect, copying and pasting can lead to mistakes such as missing letters and double words.

Step #6: Publish and Share

Once your ebook is ready, it's time to offer it to your audience. First, you’ll need to decide on your distribution strategy.

I always ask my clients to consider: Will they be offering it in exchange for email sign-ups, selling it on your website, or using ebook selling platforms like Amazon? Your choice here will guide your next steps.

The good news is that Visme provides a wide range of sharing and download options, so you can pick the option that works best for you.

Let me break down the process for lead generation (if you’re planning to grow your email list for future marketing):

  • Create a sign-up page using your preferred email marketing tool or use Visme’s Lead Generation Form Builder.
  • Here’s a time-saving tip: If you’re already using Hubspot or MailChimp, you can integrate them with Visme for more intuitive interactions—no more jumping between tools.
  • Download your ebook as a PDF or get a shareable Visme link for easy online distribution. You can even embed it on your confirmation landing page.
  • Then share your sign-up form via the landing page or shareable link. Be sure to send a thank you note with each email confirmation.
Download your ebook

If you plan to sell your ebook, research which platform you'd like to sell it on and learn about their publication requirements.

If you’re using your own website, I suggest you keep it as a PDF or convert it to EPUB format for accessibility to Kindle readers. For more on this, take a look at this guide on How to Make Money Selling Ebooks.

Step #7: Promote Your Ebook

Now comes an exciting part—promoting your masterpiece!

Another thing I’ve learned over the years is that mastering how to make an ebook is only half the battle; the real challenge is getting it in front of your target audience.

But don’t worry, I've got plenty of promotion strategies to help you market your ebook.

Apart from the signup or buy now button on your site, I strongly recommend using social media marketing and email follow-ups.

Pro Tip: Start by using the same style guide or brand kit you used to design your ebook to create newsletters, social media graphics and online ads to get the word out. You can even use mock-ups of your ebook to get you`r target audience's attention and show them how your e-book will solve their problem.

Share your ebook where your readers hang out. Send targeted emails to your subscribers with download links and encourage them to share with interested friends.

Get personal with your audience by hosting Facebook Live sessions and sharing Instagram Stories where you talk about your new ebook. Tell your followers a little about what’s in it and show them the table of contents. And if you really want to stand out, create an animated video using Visme for extra attention.

I also recommend writing an article on your blog about your ebook. Feature it prominently on your homepage. Ask some of your readers for testimonials about the book and weave them into your article.

For maximum impact, create a landing page where you show the ebook cover, a little description and a sign-up form. An exit pop-up for your website might also be a good idea. I've got a great guide on creating effective exit pop-ups.

Just be sure to keep SEO in mind when optimizing your landing page to ensure that Google properly indexes and ranks your ebook.

Step #8: Choose the Right Ebook Software

Out of all of the steps in this quickstart guide, this is by far the most important. You won’t be able to create and promote your ebook unless you have both quality content and quality design.

This is why it’s essential to take advantage of the right ebook software so that you can easily put together an eye-catching ebook that your audience can’t wait to dig their teeth into.

Let me tell you why I recommend Visme as your ebook creation platform. It lets you write your content, drop it into professionally designed templates and easily add your own visuals and data visualizations. Then you can share it with your audience in just a few clicks.

But what really sets it apart is that if you’re in a time crunch, you can use Visme’ s AI ebook generator. It’s surprisingly simple—just input your prompt, provide some context, choose your preferred template design and watch as it generates your ebook in seconds.

Even after you’ve shared your ebook, Visme offers analytics so you can view how many people interacted with your audience, if they completed your ebook and so much more.

Bonus: Create an Ebook with AI

With AI transforming nearly every industry and task—stopping just short of folding your laundry—it’s no surprise that you can create an ebook with AI.

However, a common misconception is that all it takes is a single prompt, and voilà, your ebook is done. That’s the difference between a generic, AI-generated ebook and an exceptional one crafted with AI.

To create an ebook with AI that you’re proud to put your name or company’s name on, I recommend using two tools: ChatGPT and Visme AI.

Here’s a quick overview of the steps you’ll need to follow to learn how to create an ebook with AI:

  1. Use ChatGPT to create an outline for your ebook.
  2. Use Visme AI to design the ebook to match your niche, topic, or branding.
  3. Insert the content into your ebook, then proofread and edit it.

Step #1: Use ChatGPT to Create an Outline

If you haven’t written your ebook content yet, I recommend starting with an outline. There are several types of ChatGPT prompts you can use to create a polished outline. The key is to be as detailed with your prompt as possible—ChatGPT can only work with the information you provide, so give it as much detail as possible.

Here are some of my favorite ChatGPT prompts that get great results:

  • "Create a detailed outline for an ebook on [specific topic] for [target audience]. Include sections on [key focus areas, e.g., strategies, tools, case studies], and ensure actionable tips are provided."
  • "Generate an ebook outline on the negative effects of [trend or topic]. Focus on [target audience] and include sections on [key aspects, e.g., long-term effects, challenges, implementation]."
  • "Outline an ebook for [target audience] on the benefits of [specific topic]. Include sections on [steps, examples, tools, and tips for success]."

From there, you can edit and adjust your outline. Then, either write out your content based on the outline or take each section and ask ChatGPT to generate the copy for you. My advice is to do it section by section so you can proofread and edit along the way, rather than doing it all in bulk.

Step #2: Use Visme AI to Design Your Ebook

Now comes the fun part—using Visme AI to generate your ebook! You have two options: use Visme AI directly within the ChatGPT app, or log in to your Visme account and use the AI Designer.

If you have a paid ChatGPT subscription, you can add Visme AI (and other apps) to your account. Follow these steps to get started with Visme AI:

  1. Click on your profile icon or account name in the top right corner to access the settings menu.
  2. Select "My GPTs" to navigate to the page where you can discover and create custom versions of ChatGPT.
  3. Use the search bar to type "Visme." The Visme integration, labeled "Presentation, documents, graphic generator," should appear.
  4. Click on the Visme integration and then click the "Start Chat" button to proceed.
How to Create an Ebook In 8 Steps ( Beginner’s Guide)

If you already have a Visme account, or if you just created one by following the steps above, all you need to do is go to Visme's AI Designer. This tool will work as an AI ebook generator and help you generate a complete ebook by simply providing text prompts

All you need to do is explain what you want the tool to do, and it will produce the entire ebook, including images, text, and everything else. You can then edit and customize the ebook in the Visme editor to give it the finishing touches.

Step #3: Insert the Content into your Ebook

Now that you have your content and template ready, let me share some key tips for combining them effectively:

  • Add visuals, data visualization and graphic elements to break the monotony in text.
  • Use visual hierarchy so it’s easy to navigate the ebook and find the information they need quickly.
  • Add white space so you don’t overcrowd the page with text or images.. It helps to guide the reader’s focus to key elements.

For more tips on designing your ebook or customizing the ebook template you have on hand, while maintaining its professional integrity, check out the section "Design Your Ebook" in this article.

Bonus Tip: Don’t forget that you can also use AI marketing Tools to help promote and share your ebook as well.
